This Scaffold Supervisor online course has been developed specifically for employees appointed to supervise the erection, alteration, and dismantling of scaffolding, as well as for management and safety personnel. Scaffolds are found almost at every construction site and are one of the leading causes of injuries and death, not only to employees but also the general public. It is one of the most dangerous areas to work in. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that all employees are working in a safe environment, and part of that is to provide competent and sufficient supervision where scaffolding is erected, altered, or dismantled. This Scaffold Supervisor online course will give a better understanding of the risks and hazards attached to the erection, alteration, and dismantling of scaffolds; principles of health and safety applicable to scaffolding; how to be an efficient supervisor; and what measures to implement and enforce for safety at scaffolding.
Throughout this Scaffold Supervisor online course, you will learn about:
- The applicable legislation: This will include an understanding of the principles of the OHS Act as well as the definitions; the roles and responsibilities of the employer, and employees. It will also include an understanding of the Construction Regulations 2014 with regards to scaffolding, as well as the General Safety Regulations. It will also include an in-depth look at SANS 10085-1:2024. It will also give a quick overview on the different types of scaffolding.
- Supervising access scaffolding: This will include an understanding that supervisors are at the point of control and how to supervise effectively. It will also include an understanding of the role and importance of a Scaffold Supervisor, the duties and responsibilities of a Scaffold Supervisor, and the challenges facing a Scaffold Supervisor.
- Requirements for the design and components of scaffolding: This will include an understanding of the design requirements for scaffolding by looking at SANS 10085-1:2024 requirements for working drawings, designs, basic scaffold design, special scaffold design, and scaffold loading. It will also include an understanding of the requirements for the components of scaffolding by looking at SANS 10085-1:2024 requirements for marking of scaffolding materials, as well as all the other different components such as sole boards, base plates and jacks, tubes, standards, couplers, etc.
- Erection and dismantling of scaffolding: This will include an understanding of the SANS 10085-1:2024 requirements for the erection and dismantling of tubular steel system type independent scaffolds, tubular steel independent tube and fitting type scaffolding, birdcage scaffolding, and system type tower scaffolding as well as protection fans and scaffold ramps.
- Safety and scaffolding: This will include an understanding of a scaffolding action plan, how to select the correct scaffolding system, safety equipment in relation to scaffolding, requirements for scaffolding tools, and safety requirements.
- Inspection: This will include an understanding of the requirements of SANS 10085-1:2024 for inspection and handover of the scaffolding.
