This Excavation Supervisor online course has been developed specifically for employees appointed to supervise work in, and around excavations, as well as for management and safety personnel. Excavations are found almost at every construction site, and are a leading cause of injuries and death, not only to employees but also the general public. It is one of the most dangerous areas to work in. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that all employees are working in a safe environment, and part of that is to provide competent and sufficient supervision where work is done in or around excavations. This Excavation Supervisor online course will give a better understanding of the risks and hazards attached to excavations; principles of health and safety applicable to excavations; how to be an efficient supervisor; and what measures to implement and enforce for safety at excavations.
Throughout this Excavation Supervisor online course, you will learn about:
- The applicable legislation: This will include an understanding of the principles of the OHS Act as well as the definitions; the roles and responsibilities, and liabilities of the employer, employees, and mandataries. It will also include an understanding of the Construction Regulations 2014 with regards to excavations, as well as the General Safety Regulations and General Machinery Regulations. It will also include SANS 10400-G:2011.
- Excavation safety: This section will include a look at a case study, as well as an understanding of the hazards of excavations, cave-ins, possible hazardous atmospheres in an excavation, and ground and surface water.
- Excavation safety principles: In this section you will get a better understanding of excavations and trenches, how to plan before you dig, and your role as a competent person. It will also include an understanding of soil categories and how to test the soil. It will also include trench failures and how to protect the workers against cave-ins.
- Hazard prevention: This will include an understanding of sloping, shielding, sheeting, and shoring. It will also include an understanding of safe access and egress, training, inspections, permit systems, excavation procedures, and safe practice checklists.
