Book – Construction Health & Safety Requirements in South Africa, by JA de Villiers

R630.00

Worldwide, the construction industry has a poor health & safety record and South Africa is no exception. According to statistics, the South African Construction industry suffers about 400 accidents each year, with a less than 50% rate of compliance to Health & Safety Requirements. With a lack of enforcement from the Department of Labour, it is up to the employers to ensure that they are not part of the problem. It is not easy to read and understand what is written in the Laws & Regulations, and this book fills that gap – making the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Construction Regulations more understandable, and hopefully helping to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on construction sites.

Description

Construction Health & Safety Requirements in South Africa (an in-depth study of Construction Regulations)

South Africa’s Department of Employment and Labour spends around R2.5 billion each year on compensation claims related to health & safety in the construction sector. With over 400 accidents each year, the question becomes: Why is the construction industry so dangerous?

With ample qualified and competent people working in the industry, the answer cannot be a lack of expertise. With all the Laws and Regulations, the answer cannot be a lack of rules or guidelines. One of the biggest reasons, is due to a lack of enforcement from the Department of Employment and Labour. They do not have the resources to deal with all the construction projects ongoing in South Africa, and many projects are finished without any inspection ever happening.

The second biggest reason is a lack of knowledge and understanding of the occupational health & safety legislation in SA. Training is mandatory, and employees are trained accordingly, however very few employees, and even fewer employers, understand what the law says, and as such, has no idea how to implement it. This causes a big gap to open, in which accidents are far too common.

This book is an attempt at bridging the gap between what the law says, and what it actually means to the employer and employee. This book strives to make the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Construction Regulations more understandable, and hopefully plays a small part in helping to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on construction sites.
